Pete Ellis covered the Alta Via 1 in the Italian Dolomites, for our pre-season recce in 2014. The Summer 2014 season was an unusual one for the amount of snow remaining since Spring.. not until late July or even August in some places, did the last snow patches disappear. The photos here are unrepresentative of a typical day on the AV1, therefore, but show the variation in Alpine conditions! Thanks again to Pete for the careful research.

The view back to Lago di Braies on the first day's climb.

Rifugio Biella and the terrain to come.

A bold view down to Rifugio Pederu.. these are as tight hairpins we ever see!

Grassy tracks after Rifugio Fanes.

Marmots playing in the sun.

The descent across screes from Forcella di Lech.

Extensive snow patches on the ascent to Rifugio Lagazuoi... they are not normally so large during the season.

A typical wooden signpost in the Lagazuoi area.

Large quantities of water flows from the meltwater, during early Summer...

... and again here with the Rio de Fanes.

Snow patches surround Lago Coldai on the stage to Rifugio Vazzoler.

Small barns at Casera Roa, as Pete was exploring potential detours to the valley at Alleghe.

Thanks Pete!
