Stewart Mackenzie and Cathy Wynne trekked from Dobbiaco to Belluno to check out the route of the AV1, at the start of the Summer season. Early Summer 2013 was notable for a lot of snow remaining in shady spots, making the route more challenging than usual. Thanks Stewart and Cathy for some superb photos.

Cathy far above Lago di Braies on the first stage, with Croda del Beco above.

Rifugio Sennes and the grassy plateau beyond, a former airstrip.

In descent from Rif Sennes to Rif Pederu, delightful paths wind between scrub and rock.

Descending the steep path, since wiped out by landslip, from Forcella del Lago.

Rifugio Dibona.

The Cinque Torri area above Cortina.

The Rif Nuvolau was called the Sachsendankhutte, a reference to thanks owed to a Saxon who refused orders to bomb the hut during the First World War.

Stewart looks out over the forests above Agordo, on the AV1's pre-penultimate stage.

The rare Alpine Lady's Slipper orchid, found beside the AV1 route.
