On a pre-season research trip in June 2008, Simon walked some of our day hikes above Zermatt.. finding the classic wooden barns of the Swiss Valais, and views of the Matterhorn with many different foregreounds.

The last miles of the Haute Route's valley alternative accompany the train line in the valley floor.

The Matterhorn.. first glimpse!

Ski infrastructure at the Sunnegga zone.

The Matterhorn and a tiny wooden hut...

... and here with lichen.

Cloud gathers around the summit.. a constantly changing scene, taken from the Stellisee.

Stone slabs cover many barn roofs in the Valais.

The barns and houses of Findeln.

On Kirchstrasse in Zermatt's town centre.

An ascent path is just visible beside the waterfall.

We climb up the Triftbach to the Trift hotel.

Peculiarly woolley sheep at a snow patch.

Here we start a few photos of barns, at Herbrigg.

Stone discs atop wooden stilts protect the barns from rodents.

Zermatt and its central church.

We like to encourage clients on our Walker's Haute Route trek, to spend a second night in Zermatt to explore the magical town centre and the walks nearby.. or third or fourth nights!
