The 2006 season was our first on the Tour du Mont Blanc. That June, the Winter snows were added to by late-Spring falls, making conditions unusual for the time of year! We have always been cautious when setting our season dates, typically starting our TMB seasons on the 1st or the 8th of July.

This is one of our favourite photos; in descent from Lac Blanc to Argentiere, the clear sky is reflected in the rim of a snow-filled tarn... and Mont Blanc too.

Light coverage has slipped off the hillside, after sun.

Above Lac Blanc the Aiguilles Rouges are a series of combes and crags.

A couple rest on the rock South of the Refuge du Lac Blanc's annexe building, with the Aiguille Verte across the Chamonix valley.

Near the Grand Col Ferret we see scenes akin to the Scottish Highlands in Spring; characteristic bare patches define the shape of the hillside.

It's snow all the way to the Grand Col Ferret! We are walking clockwise on the TMB at this point, against the flow.. the flow is only a trickle in mid-June.

Green! We have emphasised the snow and rock in the photos above; the valley was of course in full Summer mode, as here at the alp of Charousse up the hill from Les Houches.

A photo of the Aiguille Verte from the valley, showing the snowline.

Alpine Exploratory operates a close coverage of the TMB for the benefit of clients: every year we recce the TMB ahead of the coming Summer. Uppermost in our minds is the snow level and how it is changing. Warm rain makes it recede quickly. Our clients receive our Season Update before their trips, in which we advise on snow and also on any landslips or route changes. Please join us on the route!
