Before we introduced the Walker's Haute Route to our Summer programme, we got to know various routes in the Val d'Herens that made fabulous day walks. These start from Les Hauderes and Arolla, two of the valley's villages. The Walker's Haute Route passes through these Swiss valleys en route to Zermatt.

A damp day in Les Hauderes: rain on the main street.

The instantly recognisable colour of glacial meltwater, a strong flow as the Winter snows melt.

Here we look down from the Pas de Chevres. These old ladders have since been replaced by much more substantial and better-protected ones.

From the hillside above Evolene, we see Les Hauderes in the valley floor.

Above Arolla, the Cabane des Aiguilles Rouges with closed shutters - yet to open for the season.

A cloud blocks the sun!

The Walker's Haute Route passes through two or three valleys that offer substantial scope for day walks. Chiefly, these are Val d'Herens and Val d'Anniviers. Please ask us about extending your Haute Route to allow for such days - we'd be glad to advise.
