Join our guided walking holiday and take part in some of the best Norwegian daywalks in just one week. For this trip, Alpine Exploratory has joined forces with the Venabu Fjellhotell, a comfortable, family-owned hotel where you'll be based for the duration of the trip. Simply make your way to Ringebu train station and we'll arrange a free transfer service to the hotel.

In our six walks we tackle some of Norway's most famous routes. Leaving from Venabu each morning we drive to the Jotunheimen, the Rondane and the Dovrefjell national parks. We see plunging waterfalls, wide glaciers and deep valleys. We walk above blue lakes and enjoy vistas across the dark peaks of the Jotunheimen, home to Northern Europe's highest mountains. We explore deep into the remote rockiness of the Rondane and the dramatic landscape of Dovrefjell. We discover the untamed, mythical landscapes and breathtaking trails that make Norway unique.

The famous Besseggen ridge is on our agenda, as is the summit of Snohetta and the chance of seeing Musk Ox in Dovrefjell. We operate in wild reindeer country, where you'll encounter the Nordic flora and fauna, migratory and ground nesting birds, birds of prey and rare arctic alpine plants. Our precise mix of walks depends on the weather, the snowline, and the desires of the group.

Private guided trips 2021
We would be delighted to plan a privately guided trip for your family or group of friends at any time within our walking season. Please enquire with your preferred dates; then we coordinate with the Venabu Hotel and assign an Alpine Exploratory leader for your trip.

About your guide
Your guide Joy Flanagan is an International Mountain Leader from the UK now living in Norway and working with the Venabu Lodge where you'll be staying. Joy leads both cross-country skiing and hiking tours and has excellent local knowledge of the Rondane, Jotunheimen and Dovrefjell areas. As well as hiking and skiing, Joy is a keen climber and runner. She has trekked and climbed across the Alps, Norway and also in North America, Pakistan and the Indian Himalaya.

Our Norway's National Parks (Guided daywalks) trip runs in collaboration with the Venabu Fjellhotel and comprises 6 day hikes using the wonderful Venabu Fjellhotel as a base. Being a guided trip, you'll be accompanied at all times by a qualified International Mountain Leader. Transport to and from the start point of each walk is organised for you, using Venabu's minibus, and is included in the price of your holiday.

This trip would be suitable for strong hikers who are happy to walk for long distances over uneven terrain for consecutive days. To gain the most from this week in Norway, walkers should arrive fit and ready for consecutive days of demanding hillwalking.

Our leaders are knowledgable about the area: the history, the geography, the culture, the flora and the fauna. We thoroughly recommend exploring these outstanding National Parks with a guide.

Although the schedule of day-hikes is set, there is flexibility to have a rest day or extend your stay in Norway for further exploration. We describe the options here but we welcome you to get in touch if you have any further questions or information.

Add a rest day
We don't include rest days as standard; however, due to the day-trip nature of the holiday, it is possible to choose to miss a day's walk and instead spend the day relaxing at the comfy Venabu Fjellhotel. The Norwegian hospitality is fantastic so it's a great option if you don't fancy walking every day. A bus runs past the hotel to Ringebu, where the train can be taken to Lillehammer - home of the Winter Olympics in 1992 - for a pleasant day out. The shops are lively and the town's houses are in the old Norwegian style. Expect bright red and yellow paintwork and many lamps in the windows.

Make the trip longer
If you'd like to extend your stay in Norway, we'd be very happy to extend your stay at Venabu so that you can explore the area under your own steam.

If you like the look of the Besseggen Ridge, you might like to take a second week in Norway with our Jotunheimen Tour, which as normal is self-guided and stays in several catered huts, but which is also available as a private guided trip. Please ask us for more information.

Where we stay
Venabu Fjellhotell sits in the middle of the Venabygdsfjellet plateau at the southern edge of the Rondane National Park, 78kms north of Lillehammer.

Owned and run by the Tvete family, the hotel has been welcoming guests since 1950 and has a well-earned reputation for friendly, attentive hospitality. Many guests return year after year, Summer and Winter. In Winter, Venabu is a major location in the Norwegian ski firmament and runs week-long ski holidays all season long. Our main leader on this Summer trip, Joy O'Flanagan, works the Winter at Venabu on these ski trips.

The hotel has 56 comfy en-suite rooms. The superb mountain views from the dining room and the open fire in the sitting room make this a wonderful place to relax after walking. There is also a small library, a television room, saunas and a yoga room. Tea and coffee are always available in the lounge and free to guests.

Good food is important! Venabu serves daily buffets of high quality homemade food and a variety of vegetarian dishes. Every Wednesday evening the hotel serves a Norwegian Buffet: a wide selection of traditional Norwegian food with an explanation of the traditions behind the food.

Solo travellers
Solo travellers do not need to pay any additional cost on this trip for a single room. If you'd like to upgrade to a larger double room, the cost will be an additional 120 GBP for single occupancy.

Our approach to the Norway's National Parks (Guided daywalks)
With six days available we use the minibus to explore widely within range of Venabu. From the Besseggen ridge to the Rondane the aim is a wide coverage of the highlights.

The Terrain
Expect to find the full range of Norwegian walking trails up to and including the rocky, scrambly, Besseggen ridge and the ascent of Snohetta. Underfoot we cross side-streams and some particularly loose and rough sections of path. There is grass underfoot in places but the general terrain is rocky and bald, with the path being worn from the thin soil. Snow patches are common especially in early Summer. The path is maintained, in terms of waymarks, by the DNT (Norway's tourism and walking association) and provided with regular T waymarks painted on rocks.

Is it for me?
If you’re a fit and confident hiker with experience of mountain walking then you should love the Norwegian hiking style. it could be described as bold! With your International Mountain Leader guiding the trek there’s no need to have navigation experience; just fitness and experience on rough ground.

Three stages of this trip involve some Black graded terrain. These are the Snohetta ascent, the Besseggen ridge and the Gravskardhogda. The Besseggen ridge is a highlight and would be a shame to miss; we can advise further on its difficulty.

How to get there
Your holiday starts and ends at Venabu. A free pick-up is offered from the local station, Ringebu, with trains from Oslo and Oslo airport. It is also possible to take the local bus, which runs til mid-August (dates to come in your info pack) or to drive and to leave your car at Venabu's large, free car park.

Please ask us about more extensive travel within Norway. We have taken care to try many routes into these mountains and we have come to admire Trondheim as a base. Ringebu, for Venabu, is on the train line (Dovre branch) between Oslo and Trondheim. To fly into Oslo and out of Trondheim would mean you would see a large swathe of Norway and its rolling forests.

Travel to and from the trip is not included in the holiday price. We take care to give the most useful notes possible about all the travel options. We supply these both on booking and in your info pack, and we offer personalised tips at any point. The aim is that our trekkers arrange their travel by the simplest and most scenic means as suits their plan.
  • Bespoke accommodation itinerary - tailored to suit your particular requirements
