The Alpine Pass Route is an East-West trek in Switzerland. The famous area of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch comes about half-way, being the key part of the Bernese Oberland.. about one hour South of Bern by train. With an eye on the Alpine Pass Route in Summer, plus our general Winter explorations for future reference, Simon visited the Jungfrau region in January 2016.

In Wengen, the Mannlichen cable car comes into the station.

The Swiss flag flies high above Wengen.

Snow lies on the railway tracks at Kleine Scheidegg. This is the railway junction underneath the Eiger, with associated cafes and a hotel. In Winter it functions as a small ski centre; as well as skiers, tourists take the train from Interlaken in the valley, up to Kleine Scheidegg and into the Eiger by tunnel.

The Eiger and Monch.

An appealing adaptation of the Swiss flag, on a local signboard to the Jungfrau-Aletsch region of the Swiss Alps.

The aim is to reach Grindelwald on skis; here the village is laid out below.

The cable car goes up to Grindelwald's ski area, called First.

A wooden barn under the cliffs of the Wetterhorn.

At the top of the area, long views to the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn. The Alpine Pass Route will cross a pass under these hills on the stage to Meiringen.

Skiers wait for a bus back to Grindelwald.

We'll be back to the Jungfrau region in Summer; look out for our Alpine Pass Route!
