As part of our recces in the Dolomites, Lucy Stewart and Simon Stevens walked the restored World War One tunnels above Cortina. From Cortina, a road snakes up to Passo Falzarego and the old front line between the Italian and Austrian forces. The Austrians had retreated North to the ridge, hoping to hold the land behind: the strategically valuable Val Pusteria with its East to West supply routes. The Italians to the South hoped to dislodge them from below. Fighting took place on the cliffs, with tunnels excavated to plant bombs; one such tunnel has been restored for intrepid walkers armed with torches, and is called Galleria (tunnel in Italian) Lagazuoi. On our Alta Via 1 route, the tunnel is an interesting diversion that can be taken from the main route.

... and Simon. It was warm for October, even at 2,700m, with less snow than usual.

Some fortifications remain in place.

In the tunnel, lookout holes in the rock appear at regular intervals.

Steps lead down, always with a handrail.

Looking back up at the ridge; the tunnel descents about half of the height to the pass.

Further down, the Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri (five towers) are visible

Now out of the tunnel and in the open, we walked the rough and rocky path back down to Passo Falzarego.
