Lake Bohinj in winter snow, Slovenia
Lake Bohinj in winter snow

Lake Bohinj, Slovenia January 2010

Simon visited the Julian Alps of Slovenia to investigate the winter possibilities. This trip coincided with the heavy snow across Europe at the start of January 2010.

Arriving in Bled after a snowy journey. Bled Castle is seen on the hill above the famous lake.

Snow on branches in Bled.

Lake Bohinj. Ducks shelter by the shore. The Julian Alps rise on the far shore, leading ultimately to Triglav. These mountains are the destination of our summer treks.

The church of St. John the Baptist in Ribcev Laz, by the lake shore.

The wooded hill Rudnica seen from Stara Fuzina.

Walking through Stara Fuzina.

The sagging branch! These are seen regularly when snowshoeing, more so after recent snowfall. Smaller branches are the best... a tap with a pole and the snow flies off, letting the branch flick back upright.

A very snowy bottom station at Vogel.

Not much chance of that...

At a barn in a clearing near Ukanc, the snow has piled up on the fence.

The high street of Kranj, between the Julian Alps and Slovenia's capital Ljubljana.

Riding the tracks to Ljubljana.

The imaginitive winter lights in Ljubljana.

Everyone was out to play in the snowy city. The Tivoli park is just to the West of the city centre and has its own wooded hills... modest but with many locals out walking the trails.

The Franciscan church on the Preseren Square... perhaps the central point in Ljubljana. A quiet Sunday morning.

The Slovenes take snow clearing seriously and do an excellent job.

Thank you again, Slovenia!
