Gentle walking in Switzerland

Switzerland's Valais region lies to the East of the Mont Blanc area, in the South of the country where it borders Italy. As the name suggests, the Valais is a series of valleys; they run South from the Rhone valley. From the Rhone the upper valleys are hidden behind huge shelves, past which the roads must climb in tight hairpins.

This holiday's short length and the easy journey to this part of Switzerland mean that it could be ideal as a short introduction to walking in the Alps. The walks avoid too much difficulty while still giving a good appreciation of the high mountain scenery above the valley. The itinerary given is a plan only and might change according to the group and the conditions.

The holiday stays in two bases, to give a flavour of the whole valley during the course of a short trip. Begin the holiday at a simple hotel in the old centre of Les Hauderes. Les Hauderes is one of three attractive villages in Val d'Herens, in between Arolla and Evolene. The group moves up to the high resort of Arolla for its last two nights, staying in a comfortable hotel in the centre of the old village and taking advantage of the many footpaths in the surrounding hills.
